Current status The Management Committee has continued to undertaken work to achieve the Project objectives through discussions and studies carried out in plenary sessions, working groups and workshops. The Working Group members have interpreted their activity in the sense of advanced data processing with conventional and future radars. Themes followed during the reporting period have been : calibration of radar hardware; adjustment of radar data using independent data; radar scanning procedures; ground clutter, anaprop and second trip echoes; attenuation due to rain, hail and radomes; algorithms for severe weather detection; partial beam filling and beam broadening; reflectivity profile corrections; precipitation type recognition; training; combining conventional and advanced radars; computing algorithms. The work has addressed the following broad areas : scan strategies; understanding what is actually measured; derivation of Doppler products; frequency of clear air echoes over Europe; VAD wind profiles; ground clutter rejection; retrieval of thermodynamic parameters; training; use of Doppler radar for hydrology; biostatic Doppler radars; use of Doppler spectral width; assimilation of Doppler data in NWP.
