The enquiry that has proceeded from the problems associated with this method of a single energy input factor in terms of productivity has led to multi-factor productivity analysis. We have here two approaches: parametric and non-parametric. Parametric approach famously includes two methods: the erstwhile popular total factor energy productivity analysis and the currently fanciful stochastic frontier production function analysis; The non-parametric approach is popularly represented by data envelopment analysis.

The present paper is an attempt to measure efficiency in electrical energy consumption in Kerala, India. We apply the non-parametric mathematical programming method of data envelopment analysis of the multi-factor productivity approach, and estimate the efficiency measures under the two scale assumptions of constant returns to scale CRS and variable returns to scale VRS ; the latter includes both increasing IRS and decreasing returns to scale DRS.

What is energy efficiency?: Concepts, indicators and methodological issues

This paper critically reviews the range of energy efficiency indicators that can be used, particularly at the policy level. Traditional thermodynamic indicators of energy efficiency were found to be of limited use, as they give insufficient attention to required end use services. The specific limitations and appropriate uses of physical-thermodynamic, economic-thermodynamic and pure economic indicators of energy efficiency are also considered. The paper concludes with a discussion of the per- sistent methodological problems and issues which are encountered when attempting to operational- ize all of the energy efficiency indicators. These include the role of value judgements in the construction of energy efficiency indicators, the energy quality problem, the boundary problem, the joint production problem and the question of isolating the underlying technical energy efficiency trend from the aggregate indicator.

Prior research tends to propose and examine the negative relationship between market segmentation and energy efficiency. Does market segmentation necessarily impair energy efficiency? Considering the critical role that Chinaese government play in managing erergy efficiency, we propose a non-linear relationship between market segmentation and energy efficiency. Using data of 30 provinces in Mainland China during to , we find an inverse U-shaped relationship between market segmentation and energy efficiency. Our findings remain robust after controlling endogeneity issues. Therefore, a moderate level of market segmentation is acceptable and beneficial for long-term improvement of energy efficiency in emerging economies.

Therefore, the study resulted in a clearer understanding and synthesis of the research field, gaps in scientific literature and industrial needs, hence guiding further research.
