Mutual information

Information is the source of a communication system, whether it is analog or digital. Information theory is a mathematical approach to the study of coding of information along with the quantification, storage, and communication of information. These three events occur at different times. The difference in these conditions help us gain knowledge on the probabilities of the occurrence of events. When we observe the possibilities of the occurrence of an event, how surprising or uncertain it would be, it means that we are trying to have an idea on the average content of the information from the source of the event.

A Gentle Introduction to Information Entropy

In probability theory and information theory , the mutual information MI of two random variables is a measure of the mutual dependence between the two variables. More specifically, it quantifies the "amount of information" in units such as shannons , commonly called bits obtained about one random variable through observing the other random variable. The concept of mutual information is intimately linked to that of entropy of a random variable, a fundamental notion in information theory that quantifies the expected " amount of information " held in a random variable. MI is the expected value of the pointwise mutual information PMI. The quantity was defined and analyzed by Claude Shannon in his landmark paper A Mathematical Theory of Communication , although he did not call it "mutual information". This term was coined later by Robert Fano. In the case of jointly continuous random variables, the double sum is replaced by a double integral : [2] :

Imagine that someone hands you a sealed envelope, containing, say, a telegram. You want to know what the message is, but you can't just open it up and read it. Instead you have to play a game with the messenger: you get to ask yes-or-no questions about the contents of the envelope, to which he'll respond truthfully. Question: assuming this rather contrived and boring exercise is repeated many times over, and you get as clever at choosing your questions as possible, what's the smallest number of questions needed, on average, to get the contents of the message nailed down? This question actually has an answer. Suppose there are only a finite number of messages "Yes"; "No"; "Marry me? If you were allowed to ask questions with three possible answers, it'd be log to the base three.

An existing conjecture states that the Shannon mutual information contained in the ground-state wave function of conformally invariant quantum chains, on periodic lattices, has a leading finite-size scaling behavior that, similarly as the von Neumann entanglement entropy, depends on the value of the central charge of the underlying conformal field theory describing the physical properties. This conjecture applies whenever the ground-state wave function is expressed in some special basis conformal basis. Its formulation comes mainly from numerical evidences on exactly integrable quantum chains. In this paper, the above conjecture was tested for several general nonintegrable quantum chains. These quantum chains contain nearest-neighbor as well next-nearest-neighbor interactions coupling constant p.

Information theory is a subfield of mathematics concerned with transmitting data across a noisy channel. A cornerstone of information theory is the idea of quantifying how much information there is in a message. More generally, this can be used to quantify the information in an event and a random variable, called entropy, and is calculated using probability.

Cross Validated is a question and answer site for people interested in statistics, machine learning, data analysis, data mining, and data visualization. It only takes a minute to sign up. I'm not a statistic major, so my knowledge of statistics is quite limited but I've found myself in need of learning about and using mutual information.

Digital Communication - Information Theory

The universe is overflowing with information. Everything must follow the rules of information theory, no matter the format. With information theory, we can measure and compare how much information is present in different signals. In this section, we will investigate the fundamental concepts of information theory and applications of information theory in machine learning. Before we get started, let us outline the relationship between machine learning and information theory.

Curator: Yasser Roudi. Eugene M. Peter E. Mutual information is one of many quantities that measures how much one random variables tells us about another. It is a dimensionless quantity with generally units of bits , and can be thought of as the reduction in uncertainty about one random variable given knowledge of another. High mutual information indicates a large reduction in uncertainty; low mutual information indicates a small reduction; and zero mutual information between two random variables means the variables are independent. One should be aware, though, that the formal replacement of sums by integrals hides a great deal of subtlety, and, for distributions that are not sufficiently smooth, may not even work.

This document is an introduction to entropy and mutual information for discrete random variables. It gives their definitions in terms of prob- abilities, and a few.

- Pi'dame uno.
