The Mazar-i-Sharif city is part of the Balkh province, north of Afghanistan, and its groundwater resources are developed for water supply and irrigation purposes. The main lithological units consist chiefly of evaporite, conglomerate, sandstone, siltstone, and loess. In order to evaluate the quality of groundwater in the study area, 28 samples were collected and analyzed for various ions. Chemical indices like sodium adsorption ratio, the percentage of sodium, residual sodium carbonate and permeability index were calculated. Based on the analytical results, groundwater in the area is generally very hard, brackish, high to very high saline, and alkaline in nature.

One hell of a great groundwater textbook now available free

The Groundwater Project, a non-profit organization, registered in Canada, is committed to contribute to advancement in education by creating and making available online free high-quality groundwater educational material for all. The Groundwater Project is led by Dr. John Cherry, recipient of the Stockholm Water Prize, and managed by a member international Steering Committee and a larger and globally diverse Advisory Committee. To advance the state of the science worldwide, the authors then agreed to provide free downloads of the original text and translations through the Hydrogeologists Without Borders website. This laudable initiative provided the inspiration for the much larger Groundwater Project aimed at updating and largely expanding the coverage of the original book. As of today, more than 20 institutions are partnering with us and many others are on their way. The Groundwater Project was initiated in to cover nearly all aspects of groundwater relevant to both developed and developing countries.

The PDF version was downloaded more than times in the first week. And, as surface water — the water in river and lakes — becomes increasingly scarce, people are using groundwater for drinking water and irrigation. So people in areas short of water tend to pump fossil groundwater, drawing down water tables significantly, with very little regulation. Groundwater is under stress here at home as well. For example, Alberta no longer issues new permits to take water from the South Saskatchewan River Basin, which means people and industries are turning to groundwater for their water supply. Furthermore, more people are moving to acreages that rely on groundwater. The field of hydrogeology is growing along with the increasing stresses on global water supplies.

This text book is almost as old as I am and important parts of modern hydrogeology are rusty or non-existent like hydroecology amongst other topics but it is still lucidly written and useful. I routinely send students to read chapters so I am happy that it is now available free. I look forward to Groundwater2. Your email address will not be published. By Tom Gleeson.

We are excited to share with you the Original Groundwater textbook (by Freeze and Cherry (), now available in PDF. We are very grateful to Pearson.

Geologic characteristics such as permeability, porosity, anisotropy, and homogeneity, are functions not only of the type of rock or soil material, but also of the depositional environment, diagenesis, and tectonic processes such as folding and faulting that may have occurred after deposition.
