The physical properties of the astronomical compact objects are explored on a theoretical and observational basis in a textbook designed for a one-semester beginning-graduate-level astrophysics course. Overlapping topics from solid-state, nuclear, and particle physics, relativity theory, and hydrodynamics are considered. Subjects discussed include star deaths and the formation of the compact objects, the cold equation of state below and above neutron dip, white dwarfs and their cooling, perturbations of fluid configurations, rotation and magnetic fields, pulsars, compact X-ray sources, accretion onto compact objects, gravitational radiation, supermassive stars, stellar collapse, and supernova explosions. Received: 6 March Accepted: 29 May The internal structure constants k j and the radius of gyration are useful tools for investigating the apsidal motion and tidal evolution of close binaries and planetary systems. These parameters are available for various evolutionary phases but they are scarce for the late stages of stellar evolution. To cover this gap, we present here the calculations of the apsidal-motion constants, the fractional radius of gyration, and the gravitational potential energy for two grids of cooling evolutionary sequences of white dwarfs and for neutron star models.

We review severe constraints on asymmetric bosonic dark matter based on observations of old neutron stars. Under certain conditions, dark matter particles in the form of asymmetric bosonic WIMPs can be effectively trapped onto nearby neutron stars, where they can rapidly thermalize and concentrate in the core of the star. If some conditions are met, the WIMP population can collapse gravitationally and form a black hole that can eventually destroy the star. Based on the existence of old nearby neutron stars, we can exclude certain classes of dark matter candidates. Compact stars such as neutron stars and white dwarfs can lead in general to two types of constraints regarding dark matter candidates.

A white dwarf , also called a degenerate dwarf , is a stellar core remnant composed mostly of electron-degenerate matter. A white dwarf is very dense : its mass is comparable to that of the Sun , while its volume is comparable to that of Earth. A white dwarf's faint luminosity comes from the emission of stored thermal energy ; no fusion takes place in a white dwarf. There are currently thought to be eight white dwarfs among the hundred star systems nearest the Sun. White dwarfs are thought to be the final evolutionary state of stars whose mass is not high enough to become a neutron star or black hole.
