The use of vaccination in poultry production.

Poultry sector is very useful for humans in terms of production of food items like meat and eggs. Pakistan has a developing poultry sector and is the second important sector after the textile industry. The poultry sector is encountered with many challenges; among them is the high incidence of disease outbreaks that result in colossal economic losses. The disease outbreaks have also occurred in vaccinated flocks. Better understanding of the causes of vaccine failure will result in identifying prophylactic measures regarding disease outbreaks in poultry flocks. This chapter overviews the common causes of vaccine failure and further highlights the procedures for successful immunization. Poultry sector is the source of animal proteins in the form of meat and eggs.

Vaccination Programs in Poultry

Vaccinations are an essential part of improving the health of birds and are a strong component of general biosecurity. As vaccinations prevent diseases from occurring in the first place, they reduce the need for medications, such as antibiotics, to be given to birds. Egg laying birds should be sourced from a reputable pullet rearer where possible as all of the important vaccinations would be given during the rearing process in a correct and professional manner.

Vaccinations against diseases to prevent disease outbreaks are strategic to disease prevention, but vaccination failures may constitute a challenge in practice. This study was aimed at assessing the adoption and failure rates of vaccinations in 80 chicken farms in Jos, Nigeria. Data were obtained through a structured questionnaire validated by interviews and checking of farm and veterinary records. Vaccination score 0—1 from the vaccination checklist 5 for broilers and 12 for layers and vaccination procedure score 0—1 , based on scored adopted procedures, were calculated for each farm. Vaccine effectiveness was calculated for each vaccine using the odds ratio from the association of frequencies of disease outbreaks in vaccinated and unvaccinated flocks. Farmers used more of imported than local vaccines.

Vaccines are used to prevent or reduce problems that can occur when a poultry flock is exposed to field disease organisms. Vaccinations should be thought of as insurance. Like insurance, there is a price to be paid for protection against a potential threat. Costs include price of the vaccine, time spent designing the vaccination schedule and administering the vaccines, and losses due to vaccine reactions from the live-type vaccines and localized tissue damage from killed-type vaccine injections. As with insurance, if the risk of a particular disease is low in the area, it makes little sense to vaccinate against that disease, as the costs may outweigh the benefits. Once a decision is made to vaccinate, many factors have to be considered to ensure that vaccinations are successful. Before discussing the actual causes of vaccination failure, the two categories of vaccines commonly used in the commercial poultry industry must be described, and the term "vaccination failure" must be defined.

See the following tables for recommended vaccination programs for broilers, broiler-breeders, commercial layers, turkeys, duck breeders, and commercial ducklings. Individual programs are highly variable and reflect local conditions, disease prevalence, severity of challenge, and individual preferences. Vectored vaccines in which Marek's and fowlpox vaccines have been safely modified to carry immunizing antigens for laryngotracheitis, Newcastle disease, or infectious bursal disease are also commonly used in ovo or day-old chicks. Connecticut strain is often combined with Massachusetts. Bronchitis vaccine is usually combined with Newcastle. Other bronchitis strains such as Arkansas 99 and Florida 88 are included in some areas. Vaccinations at 14—21 days are optional.

Objectives Mortality, mean death time, morbidity, virus, and pre-challenge antibodies were evaluated as metrics of protection. With spray application, the vaccine is diluted in water and sprayed onto the birds. Preventative vaccinations have resulted in increased health and improved production efficiency in the poultry industry.
