A microgrid [1] is a decentralized group of electricity sources and loads that normally operates connected to and synchronous with the traditional wide area synchronous grid macrogrid , but can also disconnect to "island mode" and function autonomously as physical or economic conditions dictate. In this case the microgrid is also called an autonomous, stand-alone or isolated microgrid. In this way, microgrids improve the security of supply within the microgrid cell, and can supply emergency power, changing between island and connected modes. As a controllable entity, a microgrid can effectively integrate various sources of distributed generation DG , especially renewable energy sources RES. Control and protection are difficulties to microgrids, as all ancillary services for system stabilization must be generated within the microgrid and low short-circuit levels can be challenging for selective operation of the protection systems. The United States Department of Energy Microgrid Exchange Group [8] defines a microgrid as a group of interconnected loads and distributed energy resources DERs within clearly defined electrical boundaries that acts as a single controllable entity with respect to the grid.

Microgrids are being developed as a building block for future smart grid system. Key issues for the control and operation of microgrid include integration technologies and energy management schemes. This paper presents an overview of grid integration and energy management strategies of microgrids. It covers a review of power electronics interface topologies for different types of distributed generation DG units in a microgrid, a discussion of energy management strategies, as well as the DG interfacing converter control schemes. Considering the intermittent nature of many renewable energy based DG units, the ancillary services of DGs using the available interfacing converter rating are also discussed in the paper. In recent years, the rapid increase of distributed generation DG installation, especially those based on renewable energy sources, is expected to address the concerns on greenhouse gas emissions, energy sustainability, energy security, etc. Among various kinds of renewable energy based DGs, wind and photovoltaic PV power generation are relatively mature and are the fastest growing DG technologies.

The application of renewable energies such as wind and solar has become an inevitable choice for many countries in order to achieve sustainable and healthy economic development [ 1 ]. However, due to the intermittent characteristics of renewable energy, the issue with integrating a larger proportion of renewable energy into the grid becomes prominent. Currently, an energy system with weak coordination capability seriously affects the flexibility of power system operation [ 2 ]. As a result, this has led to the development of an effective way to integrate high-proportion renewable energy by developing multienergy systems including wind, solar, thermal, and energy storage to allow for the integration and coordination of different energy resources [ 3 ]. The major challenge of the multienergy system is its complexity with multispatial and multitemporal scales. Compared with the traditional power system, control and optimization of the complex energy system become more difficult in terms of modeling, operation, and planning [ 4 , 5 ].
