Social capital has been the object of several scientific publications for decades, especially in the field of education. Although there is a degree of conceptual similarity across the many and multi-disciplinary approaches to social capital such as networks, norms, and trust , there remains an ontological issue: an absence of consensus on what social capital actually is Gearin, ; Ivana, ; Van Deth,

This paper describes the theory of the actor-network, a body of theoretical and empirical writing which treats social relations, including power and organization, as network effects. The theory is distinctive because it insists that networks are materially heterogeneous and argues that society and organization would not exist if they were simply social. Agents, texts, devices, architectures are all generated in, form part of, and are essential to, the networks of the social. And in the first instance, all should be analyzed in the same terms. Accordingly, in this view, the task of sociology is to characterize the ways in which materials join together to generate themselves and reproduce institutional and organizational patterns in the networks of the social. I discuss the ways in which each of them has evolved. But what reason? Other attempts may have followed these, but I remain unaware of their existence, much less of their fate. As for the rest, I remain oblivious to what happened to the new perspectives announced in , or the new directions announced in , or the hermeneutic sociology of knowledge announced in However, the sociology of knowledge does not exist solely as an academic discipline.

John Law born 16 May , is a sociologist and science and technology studies scholar, currently on the Faculty of Social Sciences at the Open University and key proponent of Actor-network theory. Actor-network theory, sometimes abbreviated to ANT, is a social science approach for describing and explaining social, organisational, scientific and technological structures, processes and events. It assumes that all the components of such structures whether these are human or otherwise form a network of relations that can be mapped and described in the same terms or vocabulary. ANT strives to map relations that are simultaneously material between things and 'semiotic' between concepts , for instance, the interactions in a bank involve both people and their ideas, and computers. Together these form a single network.
